The course has gained a reputation as being hard but achievable.
2020 is the fifth year the event has been held, each year seeing more and more competitors signing up to take on the mountain.

The half marathon event offers the option of entering the Run or Tramp category. 

The race starts in Coopers Creek, at the base of Mt Oxford. Over the 21km you are going to be climbing steeply up the mountain, experiencing the amazing 360 degree views of the Southern Alps to the Canterbury Plains. You’ll descend the mountain through the ‘goblin forest’ that will make you feel like you are in a different world. The bush life is truly spectacular and it is quite acceptable to stop to get some photos or to just soak up the special feelings you get being somewhere so magical.

Once you are off the mountain you then take an undulating track back to the finish that will see you going through creeks, enjoying some great technical terrain, and experiencing some more of the most stunning bush life New Zealand has to offer.
Oh, did we forget to mention the mud? That's right, the last 6 or so kilometres gives you some awesome opportunities to get down and dirty and to leave you some great muddy legs and shoes to show how tough you really are!

There is the possibility of snow and ice on the summit, adding to the 'adventure' element of the race. We will only alter the route if it is blizzard conditions at the time or if there is just too much snow or ice that it becomes treacherous. You are welcome to carry poles with you.

Runners will be expected to complete the course between 2 - 6 hours,

and  trampers between 3.5 - 7 hours.


This is a true mountain event so you are exposed to the elements, changing conditions and unstable terrain at any time of year. We will be gear checking EVERY competitor at registration. Be prepared to unpack your bag at the gear check. There may be random gear checks at marshal points along the track.

Do not take any gear out between gear check inspection and the race start. This is for your own safety!! 

You MUST carry the following with you in your pack:

•        at least 1.5  litres of fluid
•        survival blanket
•        whistle
•        thermal or woolen hat and gloves
•        thermal long sleeve top and leggings 
•        wind and waterproof jacket – seam sealed stitched.
•        basic first aid kit
(The first aid kit must contain as a minimum : adhesive strapping tape, 4 band aids, 2 gauze pads, a crepe bandage and some panadol)
•        enough food for up to 4 - 6 hours
•        Any medication you will need for while out on the trail eg. Inhaler, antihistamine

There are no aid stations on the course. You must carry what you will need on the course.

We recommend that you wear trail running shoes with a good grip on them as the trail is technical.

​If you are staying in Oxford for race weekend you will be able to collect your race pack and have your gear checked on the morning of the race between 6:00am and 7:30am at the start/finish area.

CHANGING FACILITIES & TOILETS: All amenities are available at the start/finish area at Coopers Creek.

You are able to leave your personal belongings in the marquee at the start/finish area. Please name your belongings clearly.

PRIZE GIVING: The Prize Giving will take place at approximately 2pm at the start/finish area.

CAR PARKING: There is car parking along the side of Mountain Road about 500m from the start/finish area. Please park your car ‘nose in’ to the hedge. Please DO NOT park your car at the Coopers Creek carpark at the end of Mountain Road. This needs to be kept clear for other track users.

Please look out for CAR PARKING signs.

REFRESHMENTS: Oxford Lions will be providing all competitors in the marathon some food and a drink at the completion of your race. They will also be selling their scrumptious food to any of your supporters throughout the day.

MASSAGE: There will be a massage therapist on site ready to ease away any aches and pains after your accomplishment at the Finish Line. You will be able to pre-book when you enter online.

FIRST AID: The OxfordSAR team will be on hand throughout the race in the unlikely event of an emergency and first aid will be located at the START / FINISH area.

WASTE: Please dispose of any waste in the rubbish bins provided. Do not litter on the course – what goes in must go out!

DIDYMO: We need all competitors to be vigilant and ensure that the Oxford Conservation Area remains Didymo free. Please ensure that your shoes have been thoroughly cleaned and dried before using them on race day if you have been anywhere near any Didymo affected areas.​​

A large percentage of your entry fee goes towards OxfordSAR and DOC. Without them we could not hold this event.
